Nature and sports in the Island of Elba

A new way to get to know the island and its exceptional natural beauty, history and culture is through the tranquility of a nice walk.

Comfortable shoes, suitable clothing, a backpack and a map of the paths are all you need to start your trip along the ancient roads of Elba.

There are old granite mule tracks, pathas immersed in the Mediterranean scrub, as well as steep climbs up the highest peaks for the more adventurous and in shape.

Along the Great Crossing of Elba (Grande Traversata d'Elba or GTE), the road carved by the history of the ancient inhabitants of the island, one walks along the whole ridge linking the Eastern and Western sides.

Walking throug oak woods and chestnut groves, the iron mines areas and the granite quarries, we see Pisan towers, Roman columns, vineyards climbing up the valleys and ancient Etruscan settlements. We touch on the civilizations which marked the landscape and culture of the island.

The National Park of the Tuscan Archipelago made this series of paths one of its first investments work was undertakento reconstruct and render usable the network of pathways which connect the ends of the island; signs and signals were put up to indicate paths, interesting places, detours and areas which can be reached.

For those who prefer something easier, there are rest areas and panoramic points at which to stop and admire the most striking views and the other islands of the Archipelago.

The GTE path is approximately 60 Km long and enthusiasts can travel it in three days, staying overnight in the various tourist establishments and rural resorts on the island. It is yet another reason to visit this island of a thousand facets.

Nature has endowed this island with enchanted landscapes, smells sounds and colors which have enticed and fascinated travelers throughout time. The Park will guarantee the care of and continued respect for this splendid Archipelago, so that it can be handed down, healthy, to the generations to come.
